Making Mandalas in Photoshop

On April 3, 2022May 29, 2022 By scalesoflibraIn Art, Blogging, Play Time2 Comments

As I was trying to come up with a new site logo that would display well on browser tabs, I came across an article in the Adobe Support Community about making snowflakes in Photoshop. You can read said article here. I ended up making twelve different designs in one sitting following the instructions in the article, …

Site Refresh!

On March 31, 2022May 29, 2022 By scalesoflibraIn Blogging, Design8 Comments

Spring had been in the air in southeast Michigan for a few days before winter came back like he forgot something. Still, the spring cleaning bug had bitten me, and that extended to this blog. A few months ago I noticed that my site name wasn't displaying properly on desktop. Instead of saying warpedfrost at …

exist†trace — Imagination

For this song, there are several places where the lyrics as presented on Rock Lyric differ from what's actually sung. However, due to the nature of the differences, I don't believe these to be typos (save for maybe the extra "wa" in the first line); these are probably cases of the the sung & written …

exist†trace — Just One

On July 19, 2016December 26, 2021 By scalesoflibraIn Blogging, TranslationLeave a comment

This track is actually harder to translate because of the way it mixes Japanese and English. After reading miko's blog about it, I've chosen to interpret it as for the most part the English words are about the unnamed "you" confronting the woman (the singers). There are places where the subject is really unclear, however. …

exist†trace—DIAMOND

On July 9, 2016December 26, 2021 By scalesoflibraIn Blogging, TranslationLeave a comment

I love how Jyou is almost doing the GACKT "Mizerable" dance in this video. Anyway, I've been relying on the website Rock Lyric for the Japanese lyrics to exist†trace songs, as VIRGIN is the only album I have a physical copy (and thus the liner notes) of. By default, copying & printing is blocked on …

exist†trace — Spiral Daisakusen

Perhaps the only thing I like more than art is making fun of art. It comes from a place of love. ♡ When I was looking for skeleton keys for a piece (which ended up in this exhibit </shameless plug>), I bought a pack of keys with two designs. One had a crown, and the …

A Request

I have some text in the side bar to the right there that says "A Request". It reads: "So far I've tackled some really long translation projects, and given how much work I put into them, I want these translations to stay exclusively on Warped Frost. Especially GACKT's Air Moon! I'm glad if people read …

exist†trace — ANTIQUE DOLL

On May 2, 2015December 26, 2021 By scalesoflibraIn Blogging, Translation1 Comment

Just taking a little break from my usual translation work to bring you what is perhaps my favorite track from exist†trace's album World Maker. One long term project of mine is to translate every exist†trace song I have, which is to say over 40 songs. Unfortunately, I only have a hard copy of one of …

Writing Footnotes with HTML

On February 24, 2014February 24, 2014 By scalesoflibraIn Blogging2 Comments

When I decided to translate a really long GACKT interview, I was faced with the problem of how to add the notes & translation notes. The ideal solution was citations like those found on Wikipedia, e.g. numbers in the text that link directly to the footnote at the bottom of the page, and those notes …

Frost Forming

On February 12, 2014February 24, 2014 By scalesoflibraIn BloggingLeave a comment

I first started posting artwork online on a GeoCities site back in 1998. Ten years later I got my first WordPress blog. In the past few years, my Japanese ability has become such that I dared to post translations on WP. I've been thinking of gathering up the best of all this art & translation …

A Request

Thank you for visiting Warped Frost! I hope you enjoy your time here.

So far I’ve tackled some really long translation projects, and given how much work I put into them, and the fact that I am NOT making money off of this (notice the lack of ads?) I want these translations to stay exclusively on Warped Frost. I’m glad if people read my translations, of course, and don’t mind being linked to. Same goes for my artwork and photographs.

よろしくお願いしま〜す!m(_ _)m

Tsuki no Matsu, the "Moon Pine" in Ueno Park. I don't know if this is the same tree ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige depicted in his "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" prints, or if it's that the nearby temple has been grooming different pines into this shape for hundreds of years. (May 2016)

From an ice cream stand on the 参道 (sandō, the road leading up to a temple or shrine) to Dazaifu Tenmangū. They sell normal flavors & unusual flavors. Black sesame isn't that unusual, but I recommend their tofu flavored ice cream and corn flavored ice cream too. (April 2016)
