We’re bringing you behind the scenes stories of the making of “P.S. I LOVE U”!

GACKT will release his 44th single, “P.S. I LOVE U,” on February 12th. After over six months of fretfully rewriting the lyrics and singing them in different ways, this song has evolved to the point that GACKT himself has called it his “legacy.”

While working on the lyrics, seeking to answer the question “what is the ultimate expression of love,” GACKT gathered up all sorts of videos and letters that told a variety of stories, each time surrounding himself with the essence of love. Taking it all in, he made “P.S. I LOVE U.”

This is the second part showing GACKT’s journey making this song.

GACKT’s Introduction

[Episode 2] For You

This episode is told from the point of view of the person who is leaving loved ones behind. When I came across it, I was with the LOVERS in Bangkok. I saw it as I was getting ready to meet all you LOVERS.

There are LOVERS who participate in this trip every year. As I talk with each one, I often think, “Wow, she’s become lovelier than before.” Then, suddenly, I found myself remembering the words of the woman in this story. What if this simple pleasure, this pleasant time, were to end in just a few days? Once I started thinking that, the time we could spend together felt all the more painful.

For me, the LOVERS are my precious family. So I wondered, when I go, what should I tell them? What should I leave for them? When I’m nearing the end of my life, what words should I bequeath to my loved ones? “Thank you?” Or, “I was happy?” Once I started thinking about this, I wasn’t even able to sleep. Really.

When it’s your time to go, what will you use your last words for?

For You (あなたへ)

You’re such a kind person that even if I tell you to forget me, you won’t do it, will you? No, instead those words would only hurt you.

We talked about it when I was alive, remember? I said, “When I die, forget everything and find happiness with someone else.” You looked so angry and sad then.

So I won’t say, “Forget me.” But…I do ask that you bury me in the very depths your heart, so that I don’t become a huge burden on it. And hold dear the new people you meet. Please find happiness with the person you’ll meet next. Treat them well, and be happy.

I was truly happy because I got to have you in my life.

Everyone carries in their heart lots of happy moments; joy as well as sorrow.

I’ll never forget you. Thank you very much, from the bottom of my heart.

Lastly, allow me one more selfish request.

In truth, I wanted more time with you. So if it’s not too much trouble, every once in 10 years (that’s plenty enough), please think about me.

Out of everything I experienced in life, the time I got to spend with you was the best.
