exist†trace — ROYAL STRAIGHT MAGIC

This song is, fittingly, straightforward. I didn’t need to read miko’s blog about it to understand anything about the song, though I did read it anyway and found it funny that she said the interlude sounded like something from an RPG, which made her envision a hero raising their sword. Personally, I get more Yugi-Oh “heart of the cards” vibes from the lyrics, and after reading miko’s blog, thought the interlude might sound like something from Chrono Trigger.

Anyway, another interesting bit from the November 11, 2016 post was that she referred to the five band members as making up a royal flush. Hence why I made the image in the post header from the publicity photos released at the time of Royal Straight Magic‘s release.

ROYAL STRAIGHT MAGIC

GAME Let the sparks fly on this wild crazy night
LIFE You can’t predict the game of life

GAME Who will you choose? The joker’s got a poker face
LIFE You’re a player too, how’s about you bet on me?
BET YOURSELF

Your tears, lost in blue
“Don’t be afraid,” I say as I kiss you
Try rolling one of the dream die that can change tomorrow

Show me how you strive with all your might
Deeper than words
If that’s how you want it
Draw the next day

Line up with the king, queen, and jack
WAITING FOR THE CHANCE
Hey, you’re next, “BRAND NEW ACE”
IT’S YOUR TURN

Every night you pour out grey2
Nothing will come of just waiting for a miracle
The dream card that holds the future
Draw it from the deck now

Try putting all of yourself on the line
It’s faster than praying
No matter how many times you nearly zero out
Don’t let your dream end

Who cares if someone laughs at you for whatever
Don’t let go of that key
Throw open the door to tomorrow
Exactly how you want to do it

Try putting all of yourself on the line
It’s faster than praying
No matter how many times you nearly zero out
Don’t let your dream end

1. Rock Lyric says 予想 (yosou), but I clearly hear Jyou singing 予測 (yosoku). Both can mean “prediction” but the former has a slight nuance of emphasizing that it’s your thoughts/predictions because of the character 想 (thoughts/feelings), whereas the 測 (measure) in the latter points to more of an educated guess. Since I don’t have the lyrics card, I don’t know if this was a typo on Rock Lyric’s part, but I’ve opted to write what I hear Jyou singing.

2. At first I translated this line as “Nights of pouring grey are everyday,” but that sounded weird, and even changing “everyday” to “common” didn’t help. If I assume that what was actually intended was “every day” not the adjective “everyday,” the line flows better. So I went with that interpretation. (The “pouring grey” bit I’m taking as a poetic way of saying “being depressed.”)

    1. You’re welcome!

I had the feeling Igu HAD put out a deck of cards or at least card-themed promo images, but couldn’t find any. Seems a waste since they got somebody to custom design (I assume) the cool-in-a-slightly-creepy-way four suits with eyes in them.

Let's talk!
