exist†trace — Shout Out

Happy September Igu Day!

I’ve had this song in my drafts since July. (^_^;) I hadn’t actually started working on it, I just transliterated the lyrics and copied links to the relevant blog posts. And then I went off to do other things.

But, well, here we are now!

As is written on Archangel Diamond’s tumblr and elsewhere, this CD single was originally available only at live Igu shows in Japan, but a limited number of copies were reserved to be fan club exclusives for overseas fans. It features Omi’s handwritten lyrics in the liner notes. Omi wrote both the music and lyrics for this song.

As miko explains in her blog post about the song from March 2016 though, this single version from 2015 and the version on THIS IS NOW aren’t exactly the same; additions were made to the lyrics Jyou sings, and the effects on miko’s vocals were changed to match those found elsewhere on the mini album. miko encourages fans to compare the two versions.

The lyrics as posted on Rock Lyric (where I got them from) mostly match what’s sung on the THIS IS NOW version, which is the only one I have.

In Omi’s blog post from 2015 about this song, Omi writes that this song made her think once more on the meaning of standing onstage. She writes:

I’m weak. I hate myself. I despair over and over again, struggle and struggle, and scream… But even after all that, I still search for the light.

The place that is a live show, that space where everyone is, for me, that’s the one special place where I can shine.

She ends on a positive note, saying she looks forward to screaming out her reasons for existing together with all the beloved fans at Ebisu Club Aim the next day.

Lyrics in Japanese can be found here on Rock Lyric. Romanization and translation below.

Shout Out

Alright, let’s live well in this world full of contradictions
“Hollow out your hidden wounds and sell your soul,” they say

Beat up the ugly smiling face reflected in the mirror
Break out to the one stage where you can shine

The painful song about to burst, consuming your heart
Put on the gaudy armor and just…just shout!
You’ve lost one more thing,
you’ve understood the fleetingness of gaining anything2
Seeking answers from the darkness tears at your heart again tonight

Let’s live cheerfully in a world full of despair
A traitorous mental breakdown, warped love

Kill this nightmarish present now
If you put on a mask and break out, there’s “awakening”

The painful voice about to burst, consuming your heart
Grovel on this stage and just…just shout!
You’ve lost one more thing,
you’ve understood the fleetingness of gaining anything
Seeking answers from the darkness tears at your heart again tonight

Before the light you’ve attained disappears in darkness,
If you hope for the future, then keep on struggling and shouting

Your voice, carved into my chest, sets my heart free
Get through the lonesome night,
even if you still can’t see the light
Grovel on this stage and let your soul keep shouting out
Rip through the darkness, until the unseen light breaks through

1. The written lyrics say 「この舞台」(kono butai) meaning “this stage,” but Jyou clearly sings something else. I’m pretty sure she’s saying 「この地」(kono ji) instead, which means “this earth/ground” and makes sense with the groveling in the line. This change is repeated when miko sings a similar line near the end of the song. I’ve opted to translate it as “stage” in line with the written lyric.

2. The verb is left unstated here. “Understood” is my best guess, though I suppose “felt,” “learned,” or “discovered” would work too.
